Introduction

The MIID REKA AWARDS 2024 for Design Excellence - Professional Category shall be conferred to the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) and Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) registered Members practicing Interior Design for their exceptional works completed between 1st January 2021 to 31st August 2024 that epitomise the highest standards of excellence in Interior Design. Excellence in Interior Design is defined by superior design, the consistent translation of its intentions into reality, exceptional construction quality, and a positive impact on the social, physical, and cultural environment of Malaysia.

A newly-introduced category in 2024, the MIID REKA AWARDS 2024 for Design Excellence - Concept Category shall be conferred to the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) registered Members for conceptual/visionary unbuilt projects proposed between 1st January 2021 to 31st August 2024 that push the boundaries of innovation and exemplify the relentless pursuit of design excellence.

Additionally, the Awards also recognise the promising talents of student designers in the MIID REKA AWARDS 2024 for Design Excellence - Student Work Category, whose works demonstrate exceptional design thinking, problem-solving capabilities and soundness in construction.

Objectives
  • To recognise Interior Designers and Students who pursue excellence in design which reflect local content in design, detail, material, etc.
  • To recognise the client bodies who enable the achievement of excellence in Interior Design.
  • To promote the development of quality built interior environments that have beneficial, social, physical and cultural impacts on the community and country.
  • To recognise young talents through students’ course works in relation to various components of the course.
Entry Requirements
Design Excellence - Professional Category
  • Entrants must be an active MIID Member (Fellow & Corporate Members only).
  • Entrants must be registered with LAM as Interior Designers or Architects, and practicing Interior Design.
  • Entries submitted for must be built projects, completed between 1st January 2021 to 31st August 2024.
  • Entrants are welcome to submit one or more entries in any of the Design Excellence Professional award categories.
  • Each entry will be subject to the entry fees stated below.
  • Submissions of projects must have been consented to by the client(s)/owner(s).
Design Excellence - Concept Category (NEW)
  • Entrants must be an active MIID Member (Graduate/Associate/Corporate Members only).
  • Entries must be conceptual, un-built projects proposed between 1st January 2021 to 31st August 2024.
  • Entrants are welcome to submit one or more entries in any of the Design Excellence Conceptual award categories.
  • Each entry will be subject to the entry fees stated below.
  • Submissions of projects must have been consented to by the client(s)/owner(s).
Design Excellence - Student Work Category
  • Entrants must be active students and MIID Student Members at the time of submission.
  • Each student is only allowed to submit one project entry per student.
  • Each entry will be subject to the entry fees stated below.
  • Student project submissions must be endorsed by their Lecturers.

A) Design Excellence - Professional Category

  • Public Spaces, Healthcare, Auditoriums, Terminals, etc.
  • A place that is generally open and accessible to people.
  • Social spaces in which people congregate.
02 - Food & Beverage
  • Restaurants, Cafes, Bars, Cafeterias, Food courts, etc.
  • Spaces where food and beverages are sold/served.
03 - Corporate Offices
  • The main office of any company, corporation, association, etc.
04 - Hospitality
  • Hotels, Clubhouses, Spas, Resorts, etc.
  • A building or space that caters to the hospitality services sector.

05 - Retail, Exhibition & Entertainment

a) Small & Medium (2,500 sqft and below)

b) Large (above 2,500 sqft)

  • Retail: Spaces, Galleries, Museums, Clubs, Fitness Centers, Karaoke, Cinemas, Amusement Parks, etc.
  • Retail: Any space designed for the display and selling of goods to consumers.
  • Exhibition: A space designed for the public display of products, art, items of interest, etc.
  • Entertainment: A space designed for the operation of different leisure and entertainment activities and facilities.

06 - Residential

a) Small & Medium (2,500 sqft and below)

b) Large (above 2,500 sqft)

  • Houses, Apartments, Condominiums, etc.
  • Accommodations where people live.
07 - Show Units
  • A "display" version of houses, apartments, condominiums built to show potential buyers the features of the living space.
08 - Green Interior & Adaptive Reuse
  • Spaces that have a green/vegetative focus that incorporates environment-friendly practices and products.
  • Adaptive reuse refers to the process of reusing an existing building for a purpose other than what it was originally built or designed for.

D) Design Excellence - Special Awards
Description
Best Interior Design of the Year Award
  • This is Special Award, selected by the judges from the winners of Professional Categories 01-08 above, and judged to be the best project of all the submissions received for the year.
  • The decision to confer this award is solely at the discretion of the judges.
Aoyama Design Forum (ADF) Special Award
  • This is Special Award given to female Interior Designers.
  • The winner of this award will be selected by the judges from the winners of Professional Categories 01-08 above.
The Judges
  • The Judges for the Awards comprising design luminaries shall be nominated and approved by the MIID Council.
  • All decisions made by the Judges are final and binding on all entries.
Judging Criteria

A) Design Excellence - Professional Category

Project Categories 01-07

  • Design Impact - Express the positive impact it has created
  • Creativity / Originality - Originality of the design merits
  • Spatial Usage - Address functional aspects of the design through the use of strategic space planning
  • Functionality - Ergonomics, refined detailing, sustainability aspects

Project Category 08 (Green Interior & Adaptive Reuse

  • Sustainability / Environmental Impact - Innovative approaches to reduce the ecological footprint of the interior space
  • Creativity / Innovation - Demonstrates unique ideas and solutions to common challenges
  • Functionality / Usability - Space utilisation and user comfort & experienceng
  • Design and Aesthetic Quality - Overall attractiveness and aesthetic coherence of the design

B) Design Excellence - Concept Category

All Project Categories

  • Concept / Idea - Originality, creativity, clarity of concept
  • Spatial Planning - Addresses functional aspects of the design through the use of strategic space planning
  • Aesthetic Appeal - The overall visual impact and attractiveness of the design
  • Presentation / Communication - Quality of visual presentation, drawings, and other visual aids used to communicate the design

C) Design Excellence - Student Work Category

All Project Categories

  • Concept / Idea - Originality, creativity of concept
  • Spatial Planning - Overall flow, practicality
  • Material & Finishes - Lighting, colour scheme, material suitability
  • Presentation - Quality of visual presentation, 3D perspectives

Payments
  • Online Payments: Fee payments can be made at checkout via Bank Transfer/Credit Card
  • Offline/Cheque Payments: In cases where online payment is not possible, cheques should be made payable to PERTUBUHAN PEREKABENTUK DALAMAN MALAYSIA. You will need to upload a scanned copy of the proof-of-payment along with your submission.
Refund Policy
  • The entry fees paid are non-refundable.
  • Please ensure that your entry/entries meet(s) the requirements to participate in the MIID REKA AWARDS before submitting payment.
  • No payments will be refunded in the event your entry is disqualified or withdrawn for any reason after submission and payment has been made.
  • Please contact the MIID REKA AWARDS Secretariat for more information regarding payments.
Entry Submission Materials
  • All entries must be submitted online via this MIID REKA AWARDS e-submission website.
  • You will be directed to create an account using your email the first time you use this site.
  • The same user account can be used to submit entires for any of the MIID REKA AWARDS categories (i.e. Design Excellence / Emerging Designer / Industry Excellence).
  • If you are unsure of which category to submit for, you may contact the MIID REKA AWARDS Secretariat for assistance.
  • Users will be presented with a submission entry form to enter and upload all the necessary project information and materials for each entry.
  • You are allowed to submit the same project for multiple project category types (for example: Public &Institutional and Green Interior and Adaptive Reuse, etc.).However each entry will be treated as a separate entry, and the relevant entry fees will apply.
  • There must NOT be any mark or identification (i.e. names/logos/watermarks) that may identify the submitter on ANY of the entry materials including the write-ups, project briefs, plans and photos. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in disqualification.
Submission Closing Date & Time
  • All entries must be submitted online, and payment made by Thursday, 31st August 2024, 11.59pm.
Award Recognition
Design Excellence - Professional Category
  • Only the name of the LAM registered Company or LAM registered Interior Designer in-charge of the winning project will be recognised in the award and on the certificates and trophies.
Design Excellence - Concept Category
  • Only the name of the LAM registered Company or MIID registered Designer in-charge of the winning project will be recognised in the award and on the certificates and trophies.
Design Excellence - Student Work Category
  • The name of the Student and his/her University/College of the winning project will be recognised in the award and on the certificates and trophies.
Announcement of the Winners
  • Winners of the MIID REKA AWARDS 2024 will be announced at the MIID REKA AWARDS Ceremony, held during the MIID Annual Ball and Awards Night 2024, scheduled to take place in December 2024.
  • The winning projects will be published in the MIID REKA AWARDS 2024 E-Booklet which will be made available for download after the announcement of the winners.
  • Winning projects will also be promoted on MIID’s official social media and authorised publishing channels.
General Terms & Conditions
  • MIID REKA AWARDS 2024 is organised by the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID), the “Organiser”.
  • All materials submitted for MIID REKA AWARDS 2024 must in no way infringe the copyright laws of Malaysia.
  • The entries are submitted and accepted on the agreement by the Entrants that there are no restrictions or fees payable for their reproduction by the Organiser of the Awards, and that the owner of the premises has given consent for nomination.
  • The Organiser and/or its agents reserve the right to reproduce any of the Entry Materials in MIID’s media and publications, and in other media and publications authorised by MIID.
  • The Organiser reserves the right to retain, for any period necessary, all materials submitted for the purpose of exhibition and publication, and NO payment, fee or charge will be made whatsoever to any Interior Designer, person or firm for such entries published.
  • The Organiser will not be responsible for any costs incurred for any of the submissions.
  • Entries may be selected by MIID to participate in other competitions, events, exhibitions, etc. at MIID’s discretion.
  • It shall be the sole discretion of the Judges to give Awards for one or more or none of the listed categories. Decisions made by the Judges are final, and no correspondence, queries and matters related directly or indirectly to the Awards will be entertained.
  • Finalists and Winning entries of previous editions of MIID REKA AWARDS are not eligible for consideration and are not permitted to be proposed for MIID REKA AWARDS 2024 and will be automatically disqualified if submitted.
  • The winners of the MIID REKA AWARDS may be required to present their works upon invitation and request by MIID.
  • By submitting entries for MIID REKA AWARDS 2024, you consent and agree to all the terms and conditions described above.
  • The Organiser reserves the right to amend any of the terms and conditions of the MIID REKA AWARDS as and when it deems necessary, in the interest and objectives of MIID.
